Help - Definitions

We have provided simple categories of building type to allow flexibility in the types of projects we know to be most common and popular in our markets. If your project does not fall into one of our definitions, please make sure you choose the category that is closest to YOUR needs - communicating effectively with your neighbours and stakeholders: they are the important ones, not us.

(1) Single Building - this is a single family dwelling,

(2)  A townhouse complex or small apartment/condominium, a duplex (2 family units on top of each other). A renovation of, or addition to, a semi-detached house or an existing connected townhome, would also fit into this classification.

(3) Multiple units in one building on one site - this would also be the appropriate category for replacing one building (a home or an existing line of townhomes) with a single building or connected series of townhouses, semi-detached homes or duplexes.

(4) Sub-dividing a single property into two properties - this category includes starting with a single property (regardless of what was there before) to be split into two separate properties. On each of those two properties there can be proposed: 2 single family dwellings, one single family dwelling plus a group of no more than 6 townhouses, or no more than 2 blocks of no more than 6 townhome designs each.

(5) Sub-divide a single property into no more than 8 different properties (this might be for a suburban project where a large undeveloped property is to be converted into a small sub-division)

We will be adding new "standardized" categories of projects over time, but if you are proposing a project more complicated than the above categories, such as multiple unit buildings on multiple sites, please go to the Contact Us page and we will work with you to upload your project details properly on the Building-Neighbours website.
